The season four finale of Showtime’s critically-acclaimed hit series “Masters of Sex” aired last Sunday and it was fantastic. All four seasons are currently streaming on Showtime. I had a recurring role on “Masters of Sex” this season, so I’ve decided to make this month’s feature about my experience of working on the show. I’m also taking this opportunity to share my ultimate beauty favorites for the first time. As the editor of this site, I interview other actresses about all of their beauty faves. This is the very first time that I’m featuring myself on my site and this is also the first “Editor’s Picks” that I’ve done for My Skin Affair. But before I get into that…let’s talk about “Masters of Sex”.
“Masters of Sex” is an hour drama starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, who portray the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters and Virginia Johnson. I was in three episodes of “Masters of Sex” this season, in the role of Cherlyn Green. My character is the fiancé of Masters and Johnson’s book publisher Bob Drag, a character that has been exquisitely brought to life by actor Danny Jacobs. Aside from it’s main cast of brilliant actors, “Masters of Sex” is known for having an incredible recurring guest cast that has included Beau Bridges, Allison Janney, Sarah Silverman, Betsy Brandt, Frances Fisher, and Courtney B. Vance (along with a list of other amazing actors). Great writing attracts great talent! For me, being cast on such a fantastic show with this group of phenomenal actors was a wonderful experience. When I got the job I had already seen every episode of “Masters of Sex” because it’s actually been one of my favorite shows since the series began. I must say…working on your favorite show is the biggest spoiler alert EVER. When I got my first script, well before the current season began airing, it was the sixth episode of the season. So it was a massive explosion of spoiler alerts for me! There is definitely something very surreal about working on your favorite show. There is an odd sense of familiarity when you walk onto sets that you’ve seen on TV so many times. The sets are brought to life in a much different way than they are when you’re working on a set that you’re seeing for the first time. And I have to add that along with the cast of “Masters of Sex” being a group of amazingly talented actors…every single department on the show is top-notch. The costume department, hair, makeup, props, the set designers…no department misses a single detail of the 1960′s. For as much of a fan as I was of “Masters of Sex” before working on the show, I’m an even bigger fan now that I’ve completely seen “behind the scenes” of the show. “Masters of Sex” is truly a class act!
I want to share what my two favorite products from the “Masters of Sex” makeup chair were before I dive into my full list of beauty faves. I love the hair and makeup trends of the late 1960′s that the “Masters” hair and makeup department meticulously recreates. I love the sexy cat eyes (all of that black eyeliner), the false lashes, the deep side parts and the bubble flip hairstyles. I love it all! The “Masters” makeup artists used Benefit’s Hoola Matte Bronzer Bronzing Powder and Make Up For Ever’s Ultra HD Foundation on me for all three of my episodes. Benefit’s Hoola Bronzing Powder has been mentioned on My Skin Affair a couple of times by other actresses in my Celebrity Skin interviews, but I had never used it. After having it used on me for contouring on “Masters of Sex”, it’s now on my shopping list. I love it! I’ve worked with so many makeup artists that love Make Up For Ever’s Ultra HD Foundation. I’ve worn it on a handful of different shows and I always like it because it gives you great coverage without feeling heavy.

As the editor of My Skin Affair, I review beauty and skin care products and also spas and spa treatments. But I’ve never actually listed my personal favorites until now. One thing that I want to share about my site is that I don’t write negative reviews. If I don’t like a product, a spa, or a treatment…I just don’t write about it. I’ve never wanted to spend my time writing about things that I don’t like. So if you see something posted on my site, that means that I genuinely like it. Having said that, we all have favorites. I have way too many faves to list them all, so I’m limiting this to the products that are at the very top of my list (as soon as I post this, I know that I’ll remember a million things that I forgot to include). There are just SO many products that I absolutely love! – PS: I am not getting paid for any of these mentions. These are my tried and true favorites.
The Editor’s Beauty Faves!
SKIN CARE: I love Kate Somerville’s Deep Tissue Repair! It’s one of my favorite products EVER. It makes my skin look amazing and I love the way it smells. I also love Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate. I always have ExfoliKate in my shower. Great product! I love Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel and Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser. And I love my Clarisonic! I’m a big fan of Murad. I’m also a big fan of Dr. Howard Murad, the man behind the brand, who I have been lucky enough to get a few Resurfacing Skin Treatments from. I’ve narrowed down the many Murad products that I love to my top four. Those four are: Murad Essential-C Night Moisture, Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion, Murad Complete Reform, and Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum. I absolutely love and stand by all four of those products!
EYE CREAM: The product that I’m most often asked about when someone finds out that I’m the editor of a beauty site is eye cream. I’ve found that the majority of the people that I speak to aren’t happy with their eye creams. I think part of the problem is that we’re all expecting a bit too much from our eye cream. We want our eye creams to de-puff, erase our dark circles, and take away every wrinkle around our eyes. That’s a very tall order for ONE product. My favorite eye cream is the one that simply makes the skin around my eyes look the best. I’ve reviewed many eye creams and my favorite is the one that I genuinely noticed the biggest difference with. That high quality product is La Mer’s The Eye Balm Intense. A very close second to that is La Mer’s The Eye Concentrate. They are both fantastic eye creams, the best in my opinion. But The Eye Balm Intense is at the very top of my list. If you want to pamper your eyes during the day, while you’re out, I recommend carrying Clinique’s All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage in your purse. This is especially good on days when you’re not wearing any eye makeup. It’s a very convenient way to give your eyes a little extra love during the day. And I love the way the application of the All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage feels. It’s very cool and refreshing, like a little pick me up for your eyes.
FACE: Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Teint Touche Éclat Illuminating Foundation is my favorite foundation EVER! It makes my skin look flawless, it’s lightweight, it blends well, and it stays put all day. I absolutely love this foundation. Quick tip: When I only want a little bit of coverage, I mix my foundation with my favorite moisturizer (equal parts). I’ve never thought about it like this before but I suppose that means that my favorite “tinted moisturizer” is homemade. Score! And that quick tip is also a great way to give your foundation longevity. Yves Saint Laurent is also responsible for my favorite highlighter and concealer, the Touche Éclat Radiant Touch Pen. It’s the best for dark circles. I love Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick. It’s so pretty! I love it so much that I have to be careful not to overuse it. Beautiful luminosity! Stila’s All Over Shimmer Powder in Light Pink is also great. I often use it on my eyes.
LIPS: Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment is at the very top of my list for lip faves and beauty must have’s. It’s the softest, silkiest, most perfect feeling lip product of all time. I always carry two in my purse, the original Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment and the Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment. My lips feel naked without Fresh! In fact, my very first post on this site in 2009 was for Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment. BEAUTY MUST HAVE! I’ve been a serious fan for a long time! Even when I’m using another product on my lips, my Sugar goes on first to condition. So even when there’s another product involved, Fresh’s Sugar is still in the mix! I use both of my Sugar faves as a base for all other lip color. For lipstick, I like MAC’s Hug Me. It’s a perfect shade for me.
LASHES: I absolutely love Estée Lauder’s Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara. It has everything that I want in a mascara. It makes my lashes look amazing! I also love Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll. Another great product from Yves Saint Laurent!
EYEBROWS: I have two very different products that I love for brows. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is fantastic. It’s an ultra-slim pencil that you can use with precision. I also love Clinique’s Instant Lift for Brows. It’s a creamy brow pencil and highlighter duo. I have a hard time achieving perfect brows, I’m lacking skill in that department. So I like having these two different products to work with.
FACE WIPES: I am obsessed with face wipes! Ole Henriksen Grease Relief Cleansing Cloths are my favorite wipes for cleansing because they’re textured cloths that exfoliate, and the texture feels really great. I also love the way they smell, super clean eucalyptus! They leave my skin feeling very fresh, clean, and smooth. I’m addicted! My favorite wipes for makeup removal are the Korres Pomegranate Cleansing & Make-up Removing Wipes. They remove all makeup, even heavy eyeliner and mascara. And I love the fresh Korres pomegranate scent. If I’ve been working and I have a full face of heavy makeup on, I remove all of my makeup with my Korres wipes and I then follow that up with my Ole Henriksen wipes to exfoliate and feel extra clean.
BODY: The Healthy Deodorant by Lavanila, in Vanilla Coconut, is an absolute MUST HAVE for me! Not only is it the best natural deodorant that I’ve ever used, the Vanilla Coconut scent is one of my favorite scents ever. My love for Lavanila started with their Vanilla Coconut Healthy Body Butter, which I still use regularly. I was beyond excited when I discovered The Healthy Deodorant and it’s one of very few products that I always mention when I’m interviewed about my faves on other sites. Highly recommend! I really like Origins Blade Runner Energizing Shave Cream for shaving my legs. It’s “for men” but I never let that stand in my way. There are several men’s shave cream that I enjoy using. Origins Blade Runner smells like peppermint and eucalyptus. So fresh and clean! I love Dermalogica’s Conditioning Body Wash. It’s a botanical cleanser that is scented with essential oils…making it a very natural, fresh, and unisex scent. I also like Dermalogica’s Body Hydrating Cream for the days when I want a lighter moisturizer for my body. Two bonuses for both of these Dermalogica products: They both come in a bottle with a pump. Score! And their natural, fresh scents make both of these products unisex. Fresh makes the very best bar soaps. The Fresh Sugar Oval Soap smells wonderful and I’ve never had a bar of soap that has lasted longer than a Fresh soap. Their soaps are triple-milled and the packaging is so lovely! Jurlique makes the best hand cream. When you massage it into your hands it feels like you’re doing your hands a favor, and you ARE. I’m currently using Jurlique’s Lavender Hand Cream. I love Pacifica’s Island Vanilla Spray Perfume and Island Vanilla Body Butter so much. I can’t get enough of Pacifica’s Island Vanilla scent. See, this is where I need to reel it in! There are just so many products that I love. One more! Jo Malone, one of my very favorite brands, is truly above and beyond. All of their scents are so beautiful, the quality is undeniable, the packaging is perfection, and Jo Malone has a stunning collection of products. Jo Malone is luxurious and decadent. Everything about Jo Malone is exquisite. The feeling that washes over me when I see a box from Jo Malone is similar to the feeling that I get when I see a small blue box from Tiffany. Jo Malone is the Tiffany of beauty products! All of that just to say that I highly recommend Jo Malone Body Creme. It’s so rich, it’s ultra moisturizing, and the scents are very sexy. If you want to treat yourself to something special…anything from Jo Malone is going to be an amazing treat.
HAIR: I’m an Aveda girl! I always want to protect my color and add volume to my hair. My tried and trues are: Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and Conditioner, Aveda Volumizing Tonic, Aveda Air Control Hair Spray and Aveda Light Elements Texturizing Creme. The great thing about Air Control is that it’s light and it’s not sticky, so you can really work with it after application if need be. My one non-Aveda hair fave is Alterna’s Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo. My scent of choice is Mango Coconut. It smells so good and unlike so many dry shampoos that claim to be translucent, this one actually is. And it also adds some nice volume to my hair. Love that product! My favorite salon, by far, is Planet Salon in Los Angeles. Ginger Boyle is the absolute best stylist that I’ve ever had. When I combine a cut from Ginger with color from Dean Roybal…hair magic happens!
GIFTS: Since it’s that time of year, my favorite beauty brands for holiday gifting are Fresh and Origins. I’m in love with Fresh’s holiday gift sets! Fresh’s scents are amazing and their holiday packaging is always SO beautiful! Fresh’s body and skin care gift sets are always fantastic and I love the Fresh Lip Treatment gift sets. LOVE! I’ve always been the most excited when I’ve gifted Fresh for the holidays because when you open up a big box of Fresh gift sets, the scents that immediately fill the room are heavenly. Origins is a brand that I know I can always count on to have a great selection of holiday gifts and gift sets that include the best Origins face and body products. Origins holiday gifting always wins for most variety and I love their packaging. I love that Origins always has a great holiday gift option for men and I also love that Origins has gifts “For the Home”. Their candles are great! Fresh and Origins are definitely my favorites for holiday gifting!
That’s my short list! Enjoy and be sure to check out season four of “Masters of Sex” on Showtime.
