Okay, let’s be honest. Most of the guys you know aren’t excited about their skin care routines and skin care products. Certainly not like you are. Most of the guys that I know stick to a bar of soap, any shampoo and conditioner, and the essentials for shaving (if they shave regularly). Most guys, in general, just want what’s essential. Just the facts, lady! They’re not out there looking for the latest and greatest eye cream to help manage those fine lines brought on by late night poker games, enjoying a good cigar or even coaching little league. For the most part, all of the men that I know don’t even wash their face’s before bed. It’s true! They brush their teeth, maybe give a good feel to their face to check out the growth of a beard in the making, and then they’re off to bed. Basic, simple, super low maintenance. Us? Me and my crew? We’re in the bathroom before bed using every cream, serum, lotion and scrub we can get our hands on…and then some. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not spending my time daydreaming about finding a guy who loves his products and devotes himself to his skin care routine. The men in our lives just go about it differently. I happen to be a fan. I love a man who smells like a man, who’s a bit rugged and rough around the edges. I also love a man who smells like his bar of soap, moments after his shower.
In the time I’ve spent writing for My Skin Affair and researching products…I’ve realized that of all the men I know, I have only one male friend who uses eye cream. One! Now, I’m not out there looking for Mr. Right and his eye cream…quite frankly I could care less. If I love him, he can use all the lotions and potions he wants or he can just stick to the basics. I’m going to love him either way. I just find it fascinating that the more I get into skin care, the more I see the many MORE differences there are between most men and women. I have to say, although I know most guys could care less about skin care products, I do love it when they at least pretend to be interested. You have to love your man even more for pretending to care about your latest Sephora purchase. He really isn’t interested in your new anti-aging serum. He just loves you, so he nods as you tell him about it, smiles and says “That’s great, sweetie”. One huge plus about being that guy? That guy saves a lot of money. No products needed equals less money spent.
I was on the phone with my older brother, Joshua, one afternoon. I was talking his ear off about My Skin Affair and searching for great products for men, and complaining that I have no men in my life to discuss this with or even ask them which products they use. To my sweet surprise, my brother said “What are you talking about? I have skin care products I use”. What?! My brother uses skin care products other than a bar of soap?! I immediately got so excited. I was proud of him when he graduated law school, I was proud of him when he got his master’s…but I was even more proud of him when I heard about his skin care routine and favorite skin care products (one of which I had recently reviewed). This got me thinking.
I decided to take the time to ask four different (very different) men about their skin care routines and favorite skin care products to research the topic. I started with my brother…
Joshua Orlando, FL. Attorney Age: 38
Do you wash your face before bed? Yes.
What do you wash your face with? It just depends. Some sort of hydrating thing. I just started using Elemis the last couple of nights.
How do you pamper your skin? (laughter) Well, I suppose that would be, I don’t know, a charcoal mask. Is that skin pampering? Origins Clear Improvement, charcoal mask.
What’s your favorite skin care product? Probably my Origins Modern Friction.
Do you use eye cream? No.
Best tip/advice for men about their skin care? Put some sort of protecting face lotion on in the morning before you go out. If you’re in a sunny place like Florida, you should have SPF 15. If you have any more SPF than that, it’s weird. They don’t make a face lotion with more than 15 in it. They don’t make one with 30 in it. You put 30 on your tattoos when you’re going to the beach. (I hate to correct my brother, but they DO have have face lotion with SPF 30 in it. Sorry Joshie. I’m still proud of you for all of your fabulous product choices.)
Which skin care product does your girlfriend use that you like the most? Sensual Amber Body Lotion from Bath and Body Works. (In all fairness, he didn’t remember the actual name of this product. He looked for the bottle when I asked him the question)
What’s your favorite spa treatment? Deep tissue massage.
Have you ever had a facial? No.
Would you like to get one? I don’t know. I’ve never really thought about it.
Note to self: Get my brother a gift certificate for a facial. He works hard. He deserves it.
David Los Angeles, CA. Art Department for the Film Industry Age: 40
Do you wash your face before bed? No.
What do you wash your face with in the shower? Shampoo. I rub it on my head, then I rub it on my face. What’s the difference?
What makes a good soap? It doesn’t dry out your face.
How you do pamper your skin? How do I ”pamper” my skin? I don’t. Sunblock?
What’s your favorite skin care product? Heavy Duty Hand Cream. When I beat the shit out of my hands painting, construction, digging in the dirt…it feels like it actually does something. And it doesn’t smell like a chick.
Have you ever been to the spa? Nope. The YMCA, does that count?
If you had to choose one new skin care product to incorporate into your daily routine what would it be? Maybe Chapstick.
Best advice/tip for men about their skin care? Really? Sunblock.
Which skin care product does your girlfriend use that you like the most? The lotion she uses that makes her smell pretty. And I like it when she wears eyeliner. But that’s not considered skin care, right?
Tim Fullerton, CA. Sculptor and Cabinet Maker Age: 41
Do you wash your face before bed? Generally, no.
What do you wash your face with in the shower? Ivory Soap and a washcloth. Same thing I wash my body and hair with.
What skin care products can be found in your bathroom/shower? Ivory Soap, Wet Ones, Edge Gel Shaving Cream (fragrance free) Suave hand lotion (for face, arms and hands), Liquid hand soap, that’s actually dishwashing detergent. It’s dish soap/hand soap. It’s really concentrated so I hardly have to use any at all. Mitchum Deodorant, 3 different bottles of sunblock. One is in my car, SPF 30.
What makes a good soap? It rinses off clean. No leftover residue. It’s unscented.
How you do pamper your skin? Isn’t that what we just talked about? I clean it and I use moisturizer. That’s me and my skin having a good time.
What’s your favorite skin care product? My favorite is sunblock. In a pinch, I have used it as a moisturizer for my feet.
Most essential product? Wet One’s. I can use them anywhere for everything, basically.
Have you ever been to a spa? Yes.
What was your favorite spa treatment? I went to an actual spa once and I got a massage. And it was a guy, so I wasn’t that comfortable.
If you had to choose one new skin care product to incorporate into your daily routine what would it be? I’d probably be willing to change out my Ivory Soap for a body wash. But I’d be replacing, not adding to my daily routine.
Best advice/tip for men about their skin care? Rinse the razor in cold water. It doesn’t give you razor burn if you do that.
Have you ever had a manicure or pedicure? No.
Would you be willing to get a facial? Yeah, sure.
Jeremy Los Angeles, CA. Actor Age: 34
Do you wash your face before bed? I used to a lot. I don’t do that as much anymore. I just brush my teeth and splash water on my face. I’m more inclined to wash my face before bed if I’ve done something athletic. In high school, when I broke out, I would wash my face every night. I followed the example of my sister back then.
What do you wash your face with in the shower? Neutrogena Liquid unscented stuff. If I get inspired I’ll buy something like Nivea, something with grains in it to use once a week.
Have you ever been to a spa? Yes. For a massage.
Have you ever had a manicure or pedicure? I had a manicure because I was hired as a hand model and I got free manicures.
Would you be willing to get a facial? Yeah. I’ve tried a mask someone got me just for the hell of it. I got drunk and put on a cucumber mask. I wasn’t impressed.
Best tip/advice for men about their skin care? For shaving purposes, I found a shave oil, King of Shaves, to put on before shaving gel. It softens up the hair and makes for a better shave.
What skin care products do you use? Old Spice, Degree deodorant, Neutrogena face lotion with SPF 15, the unscented kind. I have really chapped lips so I buy a lot of lip balm. For shaving, because I have curly hair, if I shave consistently I start getting ingrown hairs on my neck. I use King of Shaves Shaving Oil and King of Shaves Shave gel and Gillette Mach 3 razor. For aftershave I use Brave Soldier.
Have you ever tried an eye cream? No.
What’s your most essential product? Paul Mitchell Leave-In Conditioner for my hair. For my face, my aftershave, Brave Soldier.
Well, the men have spoken. Four of them, anyway. I’m thinking of how much time I would save in the shower if I used a bar of soap for ALL of my showering needs. Washing my hair, body and face with the same bar of soap? Doesn’t get much easier than that. But, I love my products, so I don’t see that happening…ever. I actually love hearing what different men are doing for themselves as far as skin care is concerned. Stay tuned for more Men Skin “The Men Speak” interviews.
