Odette and I set some time aside to discuss all things girlie! Makeup, skin care, and even wedding planning. Odette is absolutely lovely. I really enjoyed our chat. Enjoy! PS: At the time of our chat, Odette was still Odette Yustman, planning her wedding to Dave Annable. I changed her last name in this article from Yustman to Annable once she was married.
What are your favorite skin care products?
I use this cleanser from Dr. Harold Lancer, my dermatologist. He’s amazing, he’s a god, he’s really changed my skin. I have a tendency to break out like crazy so he has gotten me under control. His cleanser, the Exfoliating Blemish Cleanser, is really great to use twice daily. I usually throw that on and then I exfoliate with the Clarisonic brush. Clarisonic is amazing. I live by exfoliating my face. I have the type of skin where I have to exfoliate every single day just to get all those dead skin cells. The Clarisonic is brilliant. It’s so, so great. So, I do that and then every couple of days I throw on the polish that Dr. Lancer has. It’s the Blemish Control Polish. I also tone my face with a calming and clarifying tonic from Dr. Lancer. A cheaper version of this is just regular witch hazel, which is also so great. And then I follow my toner with a glycolic facial cream by Dr. Lancer. It renews all of your cells and it makes everything clear and healthy. And then, most importantly, I’ll throw on the best moisturizer ever, Repair, by Dr. Lancer. It’s morning and night nourishment and it’s just really great. It’s not oily, because I also have really oily skin. So it keeps everything moisturized but not too greasy. It just works wonderfully. Dr. Lancer does a great sunblock as well. I hardly ever wear make up when I’m not on set. But, on set, it just kills my skin. All that make up and it just gets in my pores and I hate it. And then also, Kate Somerville has great products as well. One of my favorite products is ExfoliKate. You can’t go wrong with that, it’s so great. So, that’s sort of my daily routine.
What’s your skin care “must have”?
My skin care must have is the Clarisonic brush. One hundred percent, have to use it! Have to, have to!
What are your make up fave’s?
What I do every day, if I have a meeting, this is what I go with. After I prep my skin with everything I’ll use this really fantastic Laura Mercier foundation brush with thin bristles at the top. It applies my foundation really light and airy. It’s not cakey feeling at all. And I’ll throw on Stila’s Natural Finish Oil Free Makeup. And that is just a great, great foundation. It’s light and oil-free and it doesn’t feel like you have much on. For a concealer, I use a MAC concealer brush and I use the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. And I also use Jo Blasco’s Concealer. It’s really great. Like I said, I have a tendency to break out and it doesn’t break me out at all and it goes on really smoothly and it lasts forever. After that I will put on a little bit of powder. I don’t really like the matte look, I like more of a glow but if I do have to use a powder I love the Make Up For Ever HD Powder and the Cargo Pressed Powder. And then I’ll go with the Cargo Bronzer in medium, which is great. It gives you a little shine, a little glow on your cheeks, which is always nice. I’m in love with Clinique’s Blushing Blush Powder Blush. I use the color “Cupid”. It’s also got that little shimmer so it gives you that nice little glow. For my eyes, I feel like eyelash curlers are sent from heaven. I feel like if I curl my lashes and I don’t have anything else on, I can live. I love the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. I use Trish McEvoy’s Lash Curling Mascara. It’s really fantastic because it comes off in tubes. It’s also great if you’re on set because reapplying is really not that necessary. It’s just an every day, really great mascara. When you wash it off at night, it doesn’t smudge. It comes off in little latex tubes. It’s fantastic. I use a little MAC eyeliner underneath for a little pop. If I’m going to go out at night, I’ll throw on a little eye shadow. I love some Benefit eye shadows. They have great stuff. Also Benefit blushes are really great too. They have so many colors and you can just try all different kinds.
Do you have a make up “must have”?
A good lip balm is always amazing. Dior has a really great one. For budget purposes, Paw Paw, it’s an Australian ointment and it’s really great. It’s sort of an all purpose. You can throw it on your cuticles, you can put it on your face, your lips. It works brilliantly. One of my good girlfriends gave it to me and it’s just wonderful. And my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler.
Do you have any good skin care tips?
One thing I have to say is that for zit solutions, before a red carpet or anything, if you have a pimple, throw on Sonya Dakar Drying Potion. It’s a miracle. You can put it on and the next morning you wake up and it’s definitely at least half way gone, if not just done. It comes in a little blue bottle. Blue goodness…I love it!
What’s your favorite spa?
The spa that I’ve been loving lately is the spa at the SLS Hotel in Hollywood. It’s the Ciel Spa. It’s just so fantastic. It’s all white, you feel like you’re almost in heaven. Everything is just so clean and they have little fruits there ready for you and you have a little foot wash before you get your massage. They do great treatments and the entire staff is amazing. I also love the Kate Somerville Spa. They have a great spa. I feel like Kate Somerville can do no wrong. She’s fantastic. Her products are great, the spa is great, it’s beautiful inside. You feel like a princess there.
Favorite spa treatments?
As far as massages go, I like a good old fashioned Swedish fluffy massage. Go to deep tissue and I’m hurting the next day and I don’t really need that. So I’m all for the fluffy, easy going massage. And you can’t really beat a good facial. Dr. Lancers estheticians are amazing. They customize the facial to your face.
What’s in your purse?
I love the travel size roll on Kai perfume. It’s just so great for freshening up. It smells like gardenia and jasmine and tuberose. It’s just wonderful. My eyelash curler. Gotta have it! My lip balm is always there. I always have some concealer just to freshen up throughout the day. And that’s about it.
Tell me a little bit about “You Again” and your character?
My character is Joanna and I play Kristen Bell’s arch nemesis from high school and I end up marrying her brother. When I first meet her I’m really nice and I pretend I have no idea who she is and it’s her mission to uncover the beast. And she finally does and comedy endues throughout the whole thing and I finally ask for forgiveness, like anybody should. I feel like you never really get over high school and the bullies you had in high school. I had a couple of girls that tormented me and I still, I’ve got to be honest, I still hold a grudge to this day. So, I had some inspiration for the movie. And the moral of the story is that you’ve got to just let go and forgive or realize that people make mistakes and hopefully one day you’ll see them and everything will be clear.
Did you have a complete blast working with all of those ladies?
Oh my gosh! They are unbelievable. Starting off with our director, Andy Fickman, he’s fantastic. He’s so great. He just created this safe zone and you could try anything and you knew that you weren’t going to fail because he was backing you up, which is so great. So the foundation was already there and then you throw that cast on top of it…Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Betty White, Kristen Bell, and Kristin Chenoweth. They are all just great, great women to be around. There was no cattiness or anything like that. Everyone was there to support each other. It was just a really, really great experience. Especially it being my first big comedy, thank God it was great. Because I feel comedies are challenging and so much different than drama, and the timing and all of that, so it’s really scary. And I had a really, really great time.
Odette is getting married to actor Dave Annable next month.
Is there anything you’re going to do before your wedding day for your skin? Pre-wedding pampering?
Oh my gosh, one hundred percent. I will probably live at Dr. Lancer’s office (she laughs). I will get a customized facial probably a week before the wedding. One thing that is really fantastic that I use daily, that everyone should know about, is a little potion called ChlorOxygen. They sell it at Whole Foods. Basically it helps your circulation and it helps to keep your skin really clear and glowing. It’s almost almost like drinking eight glasses of water with one shot. One little drop or two a day, mixed with some water…it’s really quenching and it works really well. It’s great for the skin. An esthetician recommended it to me. I started using that and my breakouts have reduced at least fifty percent. It’s really fantastic.
Are you in the throws of all the wedding planning right now?
I absolutely am. That’s what’s taking up most of my time right now. But I sort of know what I want. I never really had the wedding dream as a child, already having my wedding planned. So, I’ve just been thinking of ideas as they come along. So it’s really exciting and it’s new and it’s fun. And we just want a big celebration. We just want everybody to have a great time! And I think that’s what will hopefully end up happening.
Congratulations, that’s great!
Thank you so much. Wow! It’s a little stressful but I’m trying not to think about it too much. Everything is coming together, so it’s working out really nicely.
Thanks Odette! Wishing you a beautiful wedding day.
