This month Busy Philipps, star of the popular ABC comedy “Cougar Town”, is sharing her skin care thoughts with us, her favorite products and more. In addition to “Cougar Town”, Busy has been seen in stand out roles in the films “Made of Honor” and “He’s Just Not That Into You”. From “Freaks and Geeks” to “Dawson’s Creek” and “ER”, Busy has a long list of memorable performances.
I recently had a chat with Busy about all things skin care. She told me how she manages her time wisely while working on “Cougar Town” and being a mommy to her little girl, Birdie. Enjoy!
Tell me about your favorite skin care products.
I go to Dr. Harold Lancer. I’m obsessed with Dr. Lancer. He has his own line of products. I go to the office. I use the Lancer Cleanse and then I do Epicuren Hydro Plus Moisturizer. And then at night I use the Lancer Repair Cream. I went on Accutane a couple of years ago because in my early twenties I developed cystic acne when I was on “Dawson’s Creek” and I tried everything and nothing worked, nothing helped. I tried all the products in the world. So I did a short, low dose, round of Accutane and it just completely knocked it out and I haven’t had problems since. It was really a life saver to me. And I feel like if you’ve tried everything else, it’s really the way to go. It’s an intense drug and you definitely have to take the warnings very seriously. But, I had a wonderful experience on Accutane. If you’re with a dermatologist that you love and respect, it’s such a viable option. It saved my life as an actress, being on television. I got one pimple last season on “Cougar Town” and my makeup artist said “Well, that’s the first pimple we’ve ever seen on you”. So, Accutane is really a miracle drug. My skin is really clear and that’s a big part of the reason. I love it.
How about makeup fave’s, Busy?
I don’t like foundation so I use a tinted moisturizer. I like Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer a lot. That’s what I use on “Cougar Town”. And, in real life, I’ll either use that or Vincent Longo, which I like. Vincent Longo has a nice line of products. They sell it at Sephora. I think it has an SPF 20 in it. I love Laura Mercier’s palette of eye shadows that you can get. The big one. I have that and I love it. And recently I really got into the DuWop palettes. They’re called Rose Eyes, Brown Eyes, Amber Eyes, and Grey Eyes. I have them all and I use them a lot. They’re small and they fit into your purse. I love the DuWop Roses Palette. I’ve been using Laura Mercier Brown Copper Eyeliner for a million years. I love it. It’s my favorite. I like Cover Girl basic black eyeliner because it comes with a really good smudgy tip and it’s super cheap. For mascara, I am the biggest believer in curling your lashes. I love it. I live by curling my lashes. So, I always have to curl and I use the Shu Uemura Curler. The Shu Uemura Curler is a must. I use Maybelline mascara, but I prefer the Lash Stiletto. I weirdly don’t like Great Lash. For lips, I’m obsessed with Epicuren Lip Balm with Tea Tree Oil, SPF 15. Obsessed! It smells minty because of the tea tree oil and nothing moisturizers better. It’s my favorite. I have 47 tubes of it! I love it. And I like the Fresh Sugar Rose.
I have to have the Fresh Sugar and the Sugar Rose both in my purse at all times.
I like the Sugar Rose. And I’m telling you, if you try this Epicuren Lip Balm, you’ll love it. I’ve gotten so many people stuck on that. You have to try it, it’s amazing. It’s hard for me because I feel like I have really big lips, so I have to go really natural and neutral on my lips all of the time. Unless I’m doing a strong lip. So, for every day, I usually just use the Sugar Rose and the Epicuren Lip Balm. That’s my jam. I use the Jao Hand Refresher but the new one I love is Thieves. The makeup artist at work got it for me. It’s got peppermint oil in it and it makes your hands tingle and smell super fresh and delicious. It’s so good.
What’s your “must have” product?
I love the Epicuren Lancer Gel and you can get it at beauty supply stores. Before Dr. Lancer started his own line he worked with Epicuren and create this healing gel for zits. Or If you have a scratch you can put it on there or blemishes. It heals overnight.
Do you have a favorite spa?
I’ll be honest with you, since I had my child, I just don’t go to spas. I don’t have the time to go. If I have two hours in the middle of the day, I need to be working out or running errands. So I don’t really go to the spa anymore. I get my facials at Dr. Lancer’s office. I get amazing facials there. I try to get one once a month. I’ve been going to Stark Waxing in Silverlake when I’m home and when I’m working I go to Queen Bee in Culver City for waxing. If I can fit it in when I’m working, I’ll just run over there in the middle of the day. As a mom I think it’s so important to combine treatments. So, I get my hair colored at the Byron and Tracey Salon with Tracey Cunningham. And while my color is being done, I get my manicure and pedicure. It’s fantastic because I’m going to be at the salon anyway and so I just do my mani/pedi while I’m there.
Do you have any favorite products for your little girl?
We use the Weleda Baby Line. Weleda Calendula Baby Shampoo and Body Wash. I also love these products called Love Me Baby Me. I got it in a gift bag and I adore them. They’re the best products. The woman who runs the company, Rosemary, is very sweet. And Aquaphor is a must have baby product. I try to use all natural and organic products on my baby. We love the Mason Pearson baby hair brush. It’s pink.
What’s in your purse?
Epicuren Lip Balm, Fresh Sugar Rose, my Maybelline Lash Stiletto, my Thieves. I love the Covergirl Ageless Blush. I use a natural deodorant that’s in my purse right now, Real Purity. I’ve used it for eight years now. No cancer for me! I also keep my blue eye drops from France in my purse that are illegal.
Illegal eye drops from France? I’m intrigued. Tell me about that.
It’s these crazy blue eye drops from France. They’re called Innoxa Gouttes Bleues. They make my eyes super white. I try to only use them when I’m working or when I have auditions. I love them.
Do you have a favorite skin care tip or advice?
I think it’s important to get a facial a week before you have something important. Give your skin one week to heal after the facial. And I’m really into extractions. So I want them to really get in there and be a hero and get everything out of my face. Like for your wedding, you want to give yourself at least a week after a facial to heal. I think people make the mistake of getting facials three days before they have things and that’s not the best idea.
How’s your experience been so far on “Cougar Town”?
It’s been great. Honestly it’s been one of my favorite working experiences ever. We’re having such a blast. Courteney and Christa (Courteney Cox and Christa Miller) are so fun and the ladies definitely share their beauty tips. We drink wine and have fun, and we’re friends. It’s been great. I’m very happy.
You can catch Busy on “Cougar Town” Wednesdays at 9:30 on ABC.
