Dr. Howard Murad: An Interview And An Experience at Murad

For my second trip to the Murad Inclusive Heath Center, I was scheduled to receive another Murad Spa treatment and this time…I was also scheduled to have a treatment with Dr. Murad. Yes, Dr. Howard Murad himself! It was very exciting for me. It was actually such a treat that it’s hard to write about anything other than my time with the great Dr. Murad…my new favorite person. But I do have to say that, once again, I had a fabulous experience at the Murad Spa before seeing Dr. Murad. I was treated to the Sensual Escape Body Treatment, a 110 minute treatment that truly covers ALL of the bases. It’s very much like the Onsen Restoration that I’m absolutely in love with (previously reviewed). But the Sensual Escape includes a hot oil scrub that’s fabulous. I loved it! I felt so pampered and relaxed and my skin felt amazingly soft. Fabulous!

After the Sensual Escape Body Treatment, I was escorted to Dr. Murad’s office to receive the Technosceutical Resurfacing Skin Treatment (a customized peel). From the moment I met Dr. Murad, I felt at ease and delighted. He’s warm, generous and so passionate about what he does. As Dr. Murad explained: “We call it the Technosceutical Resurfacing Treatment and the reason it’s Technosceutical is because it’s not just a chemical peel. It’s looking at the whole person. It’s reviewing who you are. Because what we found is that part of how you look better is how you feel. And part of how you feel is a combination of everything. So eating better, reducing stress, as well as this. 40-50% of people who have surgical treatments are dissatisfied at the end. It’s not that the procedure didn’t work well, it’s that they anticipated, “Oh now that I had this I’m gonna sleep better, I’m gonna have more friends” and whatever. You’re not. With this, it’s a whole combination. And the nice thing about it is that it’s customized to you. Your skin (referring to me) was a little sensitive, so we didn’t leave it on longer and we didn’t scrub it too much. We just put on light gauze.”

I have to say, I truly didn’t expect Dr. Murad to be doing the actual treatment on my face. I expected that his nurse would be doing all of the work on me, under his supervision. Having Dr. Murad give me a treatment was such a wonderful gift. I felt honored. I’ve loved so many of his products for so long. I felt very lucky.

Dr. Murad spoke to me about all-inclusive health.

“It is thought right now that this will be the first generation where our children will not outlive us. This is despite the fact that there’s all new kinds of medicines, new technology, new surgeries, new procedures, new ways of diagnosis, yet we’re having that. Why are there more people with diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome and everything else? My opinion is that it’s not looking at the whole person. It’s looking at the problem but not looking at the whole person. Every cell in your body is connected. Unless we make every cell in your body healthy, we can’t help you entirely.”

Dr. Murad continued:

“We have a ten week program and the reason for that is your whole body changes in ten weeks. Your skin turns over once a month, your liver once every six weeks and your bones about once every three months. So you’re constantly having cells die and new one’s form as we modify your behavior, as we reduce the damage from free radicals and inflammation and as we give you nutrition that’s going to help build the cell membrane. Then, within a ten week program, pretty much every cell in your body has now reversed itself and been as healthy as it could be. If you continue the process, the improvement continues.”

I very hesitantly asked Dr. Murad if he has ever had any plastic surgery. I had to ask. He looks amazing for his age.

“I’ve had no plastic surgery and no Botox”. He then pulled back his ears to show me that there were NO plastic surgery scars and pointed out a deep line on his face that he told me wouldn’t be there if he had chosen to have Botox. You’ve got to love that! He’s so open! And, I have to add, at 71 years young Dr. Murad has perfect looking hands and he has amazingly radiant skin. His nurse, Julieta, said “He’s a beautiful human being.” And I totally agree. You can tell by the staff that surrounds Dr. Murad that everyone is happy to be a part of the Murad family. It always starts at the top. And the top of Murad is absolutely first-rate.

Loving so many Murad products myself, I had to ask Dr. Murad if he had any favorite Murad products.

“You know, the problem with that is that it’s like having children and being asked which one you love the most. A lot of times it’s the one that just came last because you’re excited about the new one. So, the Hybrids are the newest things and that’s exciting. If I had to pick one thing it would be my oldest which is Night Reform. It wouldn’t be my favorite now but it was my all-time favorite for many years because it was really something that made a big difference in the skin. We could firm your skin by 35% and it was just immediate. And now there are just so many others, it’s hard to know which one is my favorite.”

Do you have any plans of creating a neck cream? (I was so excited by his answer)

“Yes. It will be coming in 2011.”

Would you recommend always treating your decollete the exact same way you treat your face?

“The decollete is different because it’s got thinner skin and it’s not attached. You need something more. But if you don’t have anything, you can treat it the way you treat your skin. There are things you could do that would be better. What you could treat your decollete with is the Murad Firm and Tone Serum. That would be better. It’s good for the neck and decollete.”

You have two daughters. Are they completely spoiled rotten by your products and your services?

“One of my daughter’s actually works here, so she’s here all the time. She gets her facials and uses the products. My other daughter doesn’t come here that often. She comes here once maybe every two or three months.”

Do you work on your wife?

“I worked on her yesterday. I gave her the exact treatment that I just gave you. She doesn’t come very often. You would expect a typical wife would be here almost every other day. She’s never had Botox and she’s never had a facelift. She’s never had any face work other than a few chemical peels that I’ve done on her. I’ll tell you something funny about my wife. We got married about three years ago, although we were together for about ten years. You would think in those ten years she would be down at the spa often. She could have come anytime she wanted, as often as she wanted. She could have come every day if she wanted.”

I interrupt to say…”By the way, Dr. Murad, this makes you a huge catch!”
Smiling, he says…”Too late!” We all laugh.

Dr. Murad continues:

“So what happened is before we got married she finally wanted to come and get a facial and a manicure. So, she went to the reception desk (at the Murad Spa) and told them what she wanted. And do you know what they asked her? “How are you going to pay for that?” They had no idea who she was because she had never been there. Then, of course, she told them that she was Howard Murad’s wife. She looks great. She’s the kind of person who takes care of everybody else but herself. Which is good if you’re the person receiving it, but it’s not necessarily good for her.”

To be blunt sir, obviously you don’t have to be here (as a practicing doctor) for financial reasons. I have to ask…why are you still practicing?

“I love doing it. You’re right, I never have to be here. If I didn’t want to come here, I wouldn’t have to be here. But, it’s my passion. And really my ideal is to help people have better skin, looking at the whole person not just looking at their skin because your whole skin is connected. And so, it’s my passion. It’s what I enjoy doing. And, you’re right, I don’t need to be here. I mean, I DO need to be here for me, but I don’t need to be here for financial reasons. I just love it.”

My skin has been more radiant than ever, after having the Technosceutical Resurfacing Skin Treatment with Dr. Murad. I can’t wait to get another treatment. It made my skin look and feel brand new. I noticed a difference in my skin right away and that difference is lasting and feels great. It’s an amazing treatment. I got truly great results.

On a final note and to put it simply…I love Dr. Murad. It is impossible not to. Thank you Dr. Murad for your care, kindness, generosity and for being so open with me. It was truly an honor and I look forward to my next treatment with you, sir. To Julieta (Dr. Murad’s nurse): Thank you for the care and warmth. Murad Vitamin C Infusion Home Facial Kit

I got together again with my best friends, Lisa and Michelle, for a facial at home. I love spending that kind of time with my girlfriends. It’s the absolute best and we always get something great out of it. We decided to try out the Murad Vitamin C Infusion Home Facial Kit. I’m a huge fan of the Murad Essential-C Night Moisture (previously reviewed), so I was very excited to try another Vitamin C product from Murad. The part of the kit that we were initially the most excited about is the mixing dish and spatula (fan brush) that come with the kit for the mixing of the treatment and for application. We actually painted it on each other’s faces. Fun! Using the spatula to apply this treatment really added a nice feel to the facial. When I take the time to get together with my friends for a facial or do one on my own, I want it to feel special. The extras in this kit make it special and different. All three of us found that applying the treatment with the fan brush/spatula made for a very smooth application and super easy mixing process. As we painted our faces with the Vitamin C Infusion treatment Michelle said “This has a spa feel to it”. And while I was painting the treatment on Lisa’s face, she said that her face felt “warm and tingly”. I had the same feeling.

Celebrity Interview: Deborah Gibson - Murad’s New Spokeswoman

Deborah Gibson, the new Resurgence spokeswoman for Murad, exploded on the pop music scene at the tender age of 16. A music prodigy, she quickly became the youngest person ever to write, produce and perform a number one single, (”Foolish Beat”), a record she still holds today in the Guinness Book of World Records. To date, Gibson has sold more than 16 million albums worldwide.

After conquering the pop world, she set her sights on the theater. Gibson took a star turn in the Broadway production of “Les Miserables” as Eponine. She broke box office records in the London West End production of “Grease” as Sandy, and then took the stage in the U.S. Broadway tours of “Grease” and “Funny Girl” playing Rizzo and Fanny Brice. Gibson also wowed critics as Belle in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” Gypsy Rose Lee in “Gypsy,”, Cinderella in the national production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”, Velma Kelly in “Chicago,” and Sally Bowles in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret.” Gibson recently returned to her Broadway roots for a successful run of “The King and I.”

Murad, Inc. has announced the addition of Deborah Gibson to its roster of Resurgence spokeswomen. Joining Joan Lunden, former host of ABC’s Good Morning America and Josie Bissett, Melrose Place alum, Gibson will be seen on Murad’s new infomercial launching this year. The new infomercial will also feature a song from Gibson’s forthcoming album. In line with the Murad Inclusive Health Philosophy, the song suggests finding and celebrating radiance both inside and out at any age.

If you had told me in the seventh grade, after seeing her in concert, that one day I’d be interviewing “Debbie” Gibson, I never would have believed it. I was one of those pre-teens, at the height of Gibson’s career, singing as loud as I possibly could along with all of her songs. And, furthermore, I had and loved her Electric Youth perfume.

Deborah and I recently had a chat about Murad, makeup, and a few other fun topics. Enjoy!

Well, let’s start with Murad. What are your favorite Murad products?

I love the Resurgence Renewing Cleansing Cream . I used to be pretty lax about about my skin care routine. I never had a real regime. But, I love this. It leaves your face feeling like is has silk on it and it takes off makeup really well. I love the Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector and the Resurgence Renewing Eye Cream is great. It absorbs really well. The Resurgence Age-Balancing Night Cream is super rich and really moisturizing. And a little goes a long way. The Essential-C Day Moisture SPF 30 is great! Everybody in my family got Murad for Christmas this year. My boyfriend loves it too. He loves the Cleansing Shave.

What are your favorite makeup lines?

Mineral Essence, blush and eye shadow. Mac! I’m a huge Mac fan. Always have been. Too Faced Magic Wand Illuminating Foundation is great. It has a built in brush. And I love the Anastasia Eyebrow Kit.

Let’s talk about spa’s. What are your favorite spas?

I love the Murad Spa. I’m addicted. I love their Vitamin C Infusion Facial and the Vitamin C Infusion Manicure. It’s so decadent! I travel a lot and the Atlanta Airport Express Spa is great during a layover. They are so great and professional and they get you to your connecting flight on time. The Eclipse Spa in Chattanooga, TN. They pampered me all day long. It was like being in “Steel Magnolias”. I spent Christmas in Ecuador at Casa Ceibo. It’s a resort and spa. We had massages on Christmas day. Also, Two Bunch Palms in Desert Hot Springs is great. My boyfriend took me there after running my summer camp for the first time.

Deborah’s passion to mentor and foster young performers and songwriters led her to create “Deborah Gibson’s Electric Youth,” a series of performing arts camps and songwriting/recording boot camps. In addition, she formed the “Gibson Girl Foundation” that awards scholarships to those who desire to attend an entertainment camp, but are unable to afford tuition.

Taking a bit of a turn in our chat…Deborah appeared in the March 2005 issue of Playboy magazine and I had to ask her about it.

What was that experience like?

It was amazing! It’s fun when you get to break your own rules. If you would have asked me at sixteen if I would have done it, I would have said no. It seemed to have a stigma then. But, Playboy is so iconic. The nudity was secondary. Playboy is the standard for classy and sexy. It was one of the most professional experiences I’ve ever had. You walk in feeling completely protected and taken care of. I felt total freedom.

What’s in your purse?

Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector, Listerine Pocket Mist, my gym membership card, DuWop lip gloss, Christian Dior lip gloss, Too Faced lipstick, Bare Escentuals lip gloss. A lot of lip gloss!

What’s your best advice/tip for skin care?

It sounds so cliche, but sleep and feeling comfortable in your own skin. There’s nothing better. Murad is all about all inclusive health and I love that. Taking care of yourself from the inside out.

My Current Makeup “Must Have’s”

Greetings glamour-puss! So many amazing products to choose from! I’ve been having such a blast with my makeup lately. For the most part, I’ve never worn a lot of makeup. I’m most comfortable with a clean face, keeping things very natural. But, on the days that I do wear make up, I want to use the best products that I can find. I’ve been feeling very inspired lately and I’m having so much fun trying new products. There are a few products that I am absolutely loving right now. Check them out!

Clinique: I simply cannot get enough of my Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothie. It looks and feels great. And I LOVE the applicator. It’s a super soft brush that glides over my lips with ease. I love the application process with this one. I love everything about the Lip Smoothie. It’s found a new home in my purse. Highly recommend!

Estee Lauder: Loving my Estee Lauder Shimmer Powder in Pink Shimmer. Goodbye simple blush…hello shimmer powder! Estee Lauder has never looked better. I love this powder. It’s absolutely perfect for me. It has a very subtle hint of shimmer and gives my cheeks a nice, healthy glow. Love it!!!

Fresh: I’m having a blast with my Supernova Mascara. It’s a fabulous mascara and has the best packaging EVER! Such a fun and artsy looking tube of mascara. Supernova has a very full brush that makes my eyelashes look fantastic. Super sexy eyes! I’m a huge fan of Fresh but this is the first time I’ve used their makeup and I’m loving it. Also, I’m still loving the Sugar Lip Treatment by Fresh. (previously reviewed) Sugar is always on my “must have” list. It’s the absolute best. I don’t leave home without my Sugar Lip Treatment. Love it, love it, love it!

Murad: I previously reviewed the Murad Acne Treatment Concealer. I’m still loving it for the times when I have a little something to cover. It blends well and does a nice job of helping to get rid of blemishes. It’s a great addition to your makeup bag. You never know when something’s gonna pop up that you’ll want to cover and treat at the same time.

Men Skin: Murad Razor Rescue

This month I’m recommending Murad Razor Burn Rescue for the guys from the Murad Man line. It fights razor burn, ingrown hairs and irritation. Huge bonus: its smells fantastic. It has tea tree oil in it which is amazing for irritated skin and also contains Vitamin E. It’s soothing, moisture rich, and diminishes clogged hair follicles. Take care of your clean shaven face, handsome.

Spa Review: Murad Inclusive Health Spa

If you visit My Skin Affair often enough, you already know that I’m a huge fan of Murad. So, needless to say, I instantly felt relaxed and in good hands when I arrived at the Murad Inclusive Health Spa in El Segundo, California. As I walked through the front door of the spa and saw the displays of Murad, Murad, Murad products…I looked at the ladies behind the reception desk and said “There’s so much Murad, I might cry”. And, that’s exactly how I felt. Drama queen alert! It’s always fun to cruise through Sephora and browse through the Murad section, but this was very different. This is the home of Murad and rows upon rows of Murad looked divine.

Needless to say, I love my Murad products and I couldn’t have been happier to be at this spa. I was so excited and felt the need to call all of my girlfriends and squeal, but I had to get to my first treatment. You have to understand, spa time for me is as good as it gets. It always feels like a fabulous, added bonus, holiday…created just for me. And I soak it up like a skincare princess, and proud of it. I simply can’t get enough of my skincare products and spa time. The music that is played throughout the Murad spa is so soothing and the robe that was given to me was absolutely delicious. Super cozy!

My first treatment of the day was The Onsen Treatment. When I read about The Onsen Treatment it sounded very intriguing and, honestly, it lived up to all I could have imagined and so much more. It’s a 110 minute, yes 110 minute session…and it’s pure relaxation and bliss from start to finish. It began with my entire body being exfoliated. Ahhh, that always feels so amazing. With the exception of my face, three different types of warm muds were applied to my entire body: Red mud, which has antioxidant properties. Green mud, which has seaweed in it and is good for the lymphatic system. And black mud which is good for easing muscle tightness and soreness. So, as far as I could tell, these muds were covering all bases. Once my body was completely coated in mud, I was wrapped up into a warm cocoon of blankets. I felt very snuggled in. The table was heated beneath me and the blanket that was wrapped around me was heated, so it was very soothing. So relaxing! While the muds worked their detox magic on my body, I was given a phenomenal head massage, with the scent of lavender essential oil in the air. I loved my cocoon of mud. I didn’t want to be unwrapped. Head to toe…this was as good as it gets. And once unwrapped, I had no idea how I would ever get off of the massage table. I had entered such a deep state of relaxation.

Hot towels were used to remove the mud from my body and, that too, felt wonderful. Once all of the mud was removed, I was left alone and it was time for me to bathe in the Japanese Onsen tub. The Onsen tub is a round, cooper tub and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. There were Epson salts and a blend of essential oils in the water and it felt like a great escape. I was given an apple, hot tea and cold water to enjoy during my bath time. Heavenly! To be handed anything while you’re bathing is heavenly. A washcloth, a bar of soap, Brad Pitt, whatever! It just makes you feel extra special and pampered.

As if that wasn’t enough, when I was finished bathing, I was given a 50 minute deep tissue massage that was very therapeutic and absolutely wonderful. By the time my entire Onsen Treatment was over, I was sure I would name my first born Onsen, knew I wanted everyone I loved to experience this treatment and knew it would be impossible to NOT feel relaxed for the next week. It had such an amazing effect on my body. I truly can’t recommend this treatment enough. It is out of this world, crazy good! The Onsen Treatment is a fantastic detox, it’s pure relaxation, it’s one of a kind, and it left my skin feeling so unbelievably soft. I absolutely love, love, loved it!

My second treatment of the day was the Vitamin C Infusion Manicure. I have to say, when I sat down for my manicure, I almost fell asleep because I was still so relaxed from The Onsen Treatment. This particular manicure is antioxidant rich and great for restoring elasticity and rejuvenating damaged skin. My hands and arms were cleansed and exfoliated, followed by a Vitamin C toner. The Vitamin C treatment that was then applied to my hands and arms was warm and soothing. Once that was absorbed into my skin, hot towels were wrapped around my hands and arms. The towels were steamy and had been treated with peppermint essential oil. I love the smell of peppermint. So relaxing! Again, I have no idea how I stayed awake for any of this. I was beyond relaxed. Next, my hands and arms were massaged with a body firming cream and then dipped in paraffin wax. And, of course, all of this pampering was followed by a polish to send me on my way with perfectly painted nails. I left my Vitamin C Infusion Manicure very happy, very relaxed and my hands were glowing.

Murad Pomegranate Exfoliating Mask

Two of my very favorite things in life are skincare products and my best friends. So, I decided to combine the two and have a mask party with my best friends for this review. And, it was an easy decision to have Murad as the guest of honor at our party. After a fabulous dinner with my friends Lisa and Michelle, we all went back to Lisa’s house for a glass of wine and Murad’s Pomegranate Exfoliating Mask. The first thing I loved about this product is that it comes in single treatment packets…making the mask party very easy for all of us. No need to pass around a bottle or a jar. We each had our own individual packet.

Michelle, while applying mask: “Ample amount in package. Great amount of coverage!”
Lisa, while applying mask: “Enough to even do the décolleté.” And we did!

We all loved the smell. So good! Once we all had our masks on, Michelle and I both felt that the mask had a “cool tingle”, while it was a “nice, warm tingle” for Lisa’s face. Then, we all sat around the jacuzzi tub and soaked our feet in hot water with bath salts while we waited for our masks to work their magic. Fifteen minutes! I have to say, I’m extraordinarily lucky in the best friend department. We’re all super girlie and love our girl parties. Nothing better! We’ve been doing facials, manicures/pedicures, and baking together for years. I highly recommend it for you and your friends.

When it was time to take our masks off, Lisa and Michelle were both slinging adjectives at me and I couldn’t write them down fast enough. We all loved the results!

Lisa after mask: “My face feels polished, smooth, and refreshed! It’s clarifying, but not drying. My skin feels renewed.”
Michelle after mask: “ My face is taut and tingly. Pores feel small. Very rejuvenating! I needed that.”

We all agreed that the Pomegranate Mask would be perfect for prepping skin for pore extractions. It made my skin feel calm, relaxed and super smooth. We all plan on repeating this mask. It was a big hit.

Murad Acne Treatment Concealer

I absolutely love this product! Here’s the deal…I don’t review make-up. So, when I was asked to review this product I was hesitant because it’s a concealer (falling under the “make-up” category). BUT, because it’s also an acne treatment, I decided to give it a shot. Now consequently, I refuse to live without this product in my make-up bag. My goal with this site is to review products that make skin look so incredible that we don’t need to wear make-up. And I’ve always been a fan of a clean face. I don’t like the feeling of heavy make-up at all. I save those days for when I’m working. But knowing that when I use this on my face, it’s not only covering a blemish, but also treating it, I can’t get enough of it. I’ve just started using it and already have it on my list to reorder it ASAP. In fact, it blends so well into my skin that I am able to get away with using this on a blemish and NOT have to follow it up with anything other than powder. No foundation! Anything that keeps me from using foundation all over my face, I want more of. I hate the feeling of piling make-up on a blemish. With this, I know that I’m applying a treatment, not just smothering a blemish in make-up that will suffocate it and might even make it worse. With this treatment I know I’m covering blemishes with something that will actually help the blemish go away. Yay!!! I’m so happy I decided to review this concealer. It comes in three different shades, so pick the shade that’s best for you and let me know how much you love it once it’s in your make-up bag.

If you could feel my skin after I use this! So smooth! The first time I used this mask I was amazed that it made my face feel like I had even exfoliated before using it, which I hadn’t. So soft.
